many veneers are glued down, a water based paint might warp it. i would go with an oil based product, and only a light sanding. clean all surfaces to remove grease and grime, prime paint.
Hi Cindy. I would prime it first with a oil base. This sticks much better than latex and then paint. Good Luck!
Use chalk paint and it will be fine. I do a lot of furniture flips and find that chalk paint is best for situation with veneer (and lots of other too). You can buy good, inexpensive chalk paint at Walmart in the craft department, the brand is Waverly. Instead of a wax topcoat (sealer) I prefer a water-based polycrylic - Minwax makes one that I love.
