been there, done that...wont do it again. the adhesive was a nightmare to get off. there are vynal window films available- self sticking, spray window with water cut film to size put in place. living in a colder climate they have helped bit to cut down the cold draft off the window pane.
there are window covers you can buy that are basically tinted stickers. Look in Amazon
We live in Arizona and our house faces east and west... the only way to keep the heat down, is to keep as much as you can OUT.. and keeping the sun off of the window glass will help.... We put the Sun Screens on all our windows and it has made a huge difference in how hot the rooms get. The screens mount on the out side of the window, so the sun stays off the glass.
We had our done when we first bought our house... our new neighbors purchased the fabric at Lowe's and built his own frames from wood
love the shade cloth screens. Reduced the temp in my living room 10 degrees. I’ve left mine up during the winter...cuts the wind some too.
Buy 1-way heat & UV reflective window film..... it comes in 4 colors- platinum, blue, silver and gold.... https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=heat+and+UV+reflective+window+film
I like the non-adhesive stuff, you just put warm water and a bit of dish soap in spray bottle, cut a piece to fit your window and use a squeegee to apply and smooth
What about a shade that is at the right height to that it allows light in but not direct sun? Something on the outside so the sun doesn't even make into the house. Sort of like the overhang on a roof but mounted directly above the window.
Just be careful, after a while if contact paper gets too hot, you really cannot remove it easily. As it sounds as though you rent - this could be an issue when you move. I would consider an inexpensive window shade, with a little curtain in front of it.
From my personal experience, very hard to remove contact paper once it "cooks" into the glass. It can take a long time to chip off each tiny piece, as it breaks up. I would not recommend contact paper.
You're gonna have a hellva time removing that adhesive when you move. I would get some heat reflective window film, that you apply with just water and a bit of soap, and a squeegee.... https://www.amazon.com/STATINT-Rejection-Non-Adhesive-Reflective-Brown-Silver/dp/B07W6FYK1H/ref=sr_1_19_sspa?crid=2Z4P3K3QQHXLP&dchild=1&keywords=heat+reflective+window+film&qid=1607053660&sprefix=window+film+and+heat+refl%2Caps%2C240&sr=8-19-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExSTJORlpSQ0U0TVNDJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzIzMTc2MlpQU0lUQkNFWk1NTyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMDA2ODUwMUFEQlRZQ1BTOU1TViZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX210ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= They also have lots of lovely patterns and stained glass patterns but they don't reflect heat as much
