What's the best way to remove old paint from kitchen cabinets?

The kitchen doesn't have a vent hood, so the cabinets are covered with a greasy film too. Main problem is the gas hot water heater is located so close, I'm afraid of using anything with fumes. I want to remove the paint and grease, then stain the cabinets. Any advice would be welcome.icon

  • Wash the cabinets with Murphy's Oil Soap or vinegar. Or sand off the paint or use Citristrip.

I would start with a good de-greaser like Simple Green.. and hot water... scrub all the cabinets and walls.. TSP is a good follow up cleaner to prep for painting or staining... Use blue tape and a sharpie and label all the cabinets and doors (A/A, B/B etc.) and drawers before removing them... so each door and drawer goes back into the exact place it came from. Remove door and drawer pulls ... leave the hinges on the doors. Old paint can be removed using a heat gun, putty knife or scraper and by sanding. Since you don't intend to use a chemical stripper... you will need patience and persistence to get the job done... Whether you can stain or will need to re-paint will depend on what you find once all the stripping is done.
