Sorry, no crystal ball readers here.
Beautiful pond! I assume your new filtration system has the capacity to more than adequately cycle the water. Usually you should buy a filter one size larger than recommended for the size of the pond. Is it the prefilter that needs weekly cleaning in order to eliminate debris? I don’t see any pond plants They would help keep down any algae and provide a little bit of a hiding place for the koi. Do you need to cover the pond with a screen or decorative grate to keep the predators out?
Thanks for your feedback, The filter is a Pressure Bio filter so not sure if it's big enough... From the looks of it .. it's working. We just want to be safe.
We don't have fish eating birds in our area luckily. But I think we do need more plants for shade.
Thanks again.
Goldfish are pigs.
I can only guess that the bigger they are, the worse it will be.
sorry!
Pretty pond! Keep your number of fish limited, your new UV filter and pump should do most of the job, get some edging plants to help as a natural filter. Also, there's a product called GreenClean, which can be used weekly to prevent growth of algae. It is safe for pets and wildlife, and was a godsend for our pond in the hot summer algae-growing months. A weekend away should have no effect on how your system operates once you have it up and running for a while. If you have a submerged pump, you can get a screening bag to enclose it to keep debris from clogging it up. Make sure you scoop out any leaves or other debris that blows into the pond to keep the water clear.
Get pond bacteria. It will keep the algae under control. If the pond goes green or starts to have algae, add a dose daily until it clears.
Thank you for your useful input, I will sure to use them.
I have never had an algae problem. I built my pond 20 years ago. About 150 gallons. I babied it the first couple of years but, it does fine with little worry. I have a pump inside a filter system (Lowes). I clean it completely twice a year. I have heavy shade and piles of leaves. When I have nothing to do I take a little net and get leaves out. I went down to the edge of the river and got some water hyacinths. Couple years ago I set a pot of papyrus in it. LOVE it. I have only three or four fish at a time. Have them to eat mosquito larvae. If not put mosquito dunks in. We do have herons around but, never saw one in yard. I do have fish eating raccoons! I don't have a recent picture, it has changed. It is surrounded with rocks and potted plants.
I used to have a koi pond and I didn't have to clean anything ever. The pump sat outside the pond and the fish eat string algae and love it but it doesn't grow much once you get the UV filter. Fish maintain it themselves. If necessary, you can put a little maintenance pond cleaner in it that is SAFE FOR FISH to help. You only put in occasionally and read the directions about how much to put. I had a small pond so bought a small straw bale and put it in mine (not hay and not pine straw). That is a pond cleaner too. Get the right kind. Ask a pet store about the kind that goes in koi ponds and such or look it up on the internet. It's a certain kind of straw. I no longer have the pond so I can't remember what kind it is. You could probably google it. Hope this helps. I never had problems with mine no matter what.
