Begin with a clean surface. You can use a wire brush if necessary. Then make a solution of half white paint and half water. Use a large brush. Dip it in the paint and wipe the brush on a dry paper towel. Then begin to paint the fireplace. Let the first coat dry and continue with layers of paint until you get desired color.

Use plain white house paint in a flat finish. Thin it down with water until it is the consistency of milk. Brush it onto the rocks, then, lightly wipe it back off with a sponge or clean cloth.
