Visit your local Home Depot or Lowe's to see what's available in their lighting departments. Maybe a trip to Habitat Resale Store might bring you some luck. (You never know.) Best of luck.
I just went to true value hardware store and they had several thin plastic carbonate sheeting in different patterns to chose from. The guy was kind enough to even cut it for me. I think is was $5. Take existing cover off, and there should be a lip holding it in and one end will be open to slide it out of. Use that for your measurements.
I wouldn't use plastic next to a light bulb, it won't last. Go to home depot, and ask, for they may have lots of ideas.

Many replacement covers cost as much as new fixtures! Shop around a bit... LEDs may also be suitable

OK, just be wise, and be alert to the heat of the bulb. I am one who is very careful of a possible fire, since my loss. Bless you O.shag. J.
I've never seen anything BUT plastic covers on large flouresent fixtures. have them all over my garage..kitchen and basement...never ever had any issue...they don't even get WARM ! I doubt they would make them so universal if they were a fire hazard.
Linda, it is rather difficult to disguise these lights and still have adequate lighting in the room. The trellis idea could easily be worked into your decorating theme but I'm not sure if it allow adequate lighting for the room. If replacent isn't an option, do what you like to disguise or diffuse the lights and then add area specific down lights to add light as needed. There are really cool LED battery and even solar operated strip lights which unroll and self stick under counter tops and under upper cupboards. They are nearly paper thin, often even cut to fit whatever length you need, very bright, last for years and give your cupboards a sort of glowing, hovering appearance.
Or, if you really want it redone differently, contact an electical trade school whose students often need practical experience and you may be able to cut a deal with someone. The work would be to code which is very important, and you'd only spend a few hundred dollars.
OK, thank you for the info.
