You can purchase a piece of vinyl or leather and paint that into a chess board that will easily roll up
Ok but what type of ink. The ink I used on some of them doesn't dry dark. I re-colored it again but didn't help. Plus it's hard keeping in the squares when trying to re -paint.
Try burlap.
Try canvas and you can buy chess/checker board stencils at AC Moore. I have used regular acrylic paint on fabric for this type of project for years without any problem.
These are available commercially . K mart online has one for under $10.00 see below. Also see this website which has them for under $6.00 . Sometimes it is more economical just to buy one.

Cheaper to buy when you figure vinyl sells for cheap side $6. a yard. Then add paint that may or may not come out dark enough if you paint black on white; or cover enough to paint white on black.
Reminds me of my husband trying to repair a pasteboard chess board. He didn't know it was that cheap to get a new one.
we did one, many years ago. We used oak and a dark walnut, altering the layout then finish it with a coat of Minwax satin finish polyurethane. The wood was 1/4x1x12. We just cut it at 1" pieces. No stain, paint, !
