Do you have a baby monitor? Maybe install closed circuit web cam? What do you need help with specifically?

In my opinion, when a baby first comes into a home, s/he should sleep in the same room as the parents (in it's own bed or however you choose) and it's easier on Mom's body to sleep downstairs but it's not required unless suggested by a doctor. However, with Mom, Dad & baby all downstairs every one is physically closer and will sleep better. If the Mom is using bottles, it helps a lot to be downstairs, but if the Mom is nursing, I don't think it makes much of a difference.
Once baby is crawling. It's important to control where s/he goes by using gates in doorways or on stairs - top and bottom as needed.
While we are a home & garden website and this is a bit out of our scope, I answered because I had that situation. Our babies slept in a downstairs room with us until we felt they were old enough to have their own room. We had 2 BR downstairs and 2 upstairs. The master was upstairs and we switched up rooms a lot during those years. Wishing you the best.
Have a small crib in dinning room or front room during the day so you don't have to run up & down all day & night up stairs.
Stock diapers wipes spit rags in multiple locations...pre paste diapers with ointment for overnight speeds up the didi change. There are half moon shaped pillows to support baby when being breast fed. If bottl fed, make up the days supply and stash in fridge. Dorm cube type fridge or cooler if baby up stairs. Babies also need baths...there are inflatable tubs to bathe baby in....saves on space. You will be exhausted in the first few weeks but it gets better. Grandma arround to help?
