I've done this a few times. I used thinned down latex house paint like 3pts paint to 1pt water. Keep in mind that it will absorb the paint fast. Depending on the texture of the brick, you could use a brush for heavy texture, and a roller with thick nap for smoother texture. You will have to paint 3 to 4 full coats to get complete coverage.
Just finished one! Clean it really well first. I wanted full coverage for this fireplace, so I used two coats of KILZ oil based primer. Go slow and use a small, thick nap roller, plus keep a stiff brush handy in your tray-you will need it. I let it dry a full day, then I applied two coats of PPG Dover White latex paint. Let that dry and check for dark areas. Be sure and caulk where the fireplace and wall meet. Also caulk any areas around the mantle so you have a clean look. It turned out beautiful and really lightened up this small living room I am redoing for a couple.

I've painted over brick fireplaces before, but this stone is rough. The top of the hearth looks like smooth marble, but the bottom is the same rough stone.

You could also use a dry brush technique so that you can see the brick, but you have also lightened it up.
