I wouldn't go there. Remove and paint or other finish of your choice. A tool called The Mutt used to be available at hardware stores, I'm sure something similar around if not. End can be resharpened as needed. Very heavy, the weight assists in diving carpet, tile etc. I also use it in the garden for stubborn roots
There are carpet dyes.
I can relate! I've also used the mutt to take up four layers of linoleum off of an old 1950s house as well as several rooms of tile. Good luck!
