I love using chalk paint, but have found with dark stained furniture it is best to prime it first with Kilz - one to two coats, then paint with chalk paint at least 2 coats. There are lots of brands of chalk paint on the market, some very expensive too. My go-to is Waverly brand - buy it at Walmart in the craft section for about $6 a bottle (a little goes a long way) too). Lightly sand in between each coat and then use Waverly wax or water based polycrylic for the top coat/sealer.
