radon can cause cancer, and it naturally occurs in certain locations. house no. 1 had it, what was done was to vent it out the roof, using pipe and a small fan.

if you are planning to move you must disclose the radon issue. you may be asked to rectify it, or supply funds to the next home owner to have it abated.

Radon is the natural decomposition of uranium. It occurs everywhere but more in some areas than others. There is no escaping it. As houses become tighter with better energy efficient construction and older homes becoming energy efficient. Higher levels can become trapped in homes. If the levels are determined to be high the only way to dissipate it is as Dfm says vent it out the roof using a PVC pipe and a small fan.

Most people aren't concerned or misinformed about radon. It's only become an issue in about the past 20 years as homes become tighter and more energy efficient. Since it is a natural occurrence there is no way to prevent it. I believe radon mitigation has become a gravy market just as duct cleaning in the HVAC industry. People should be more concerned about off gassing from man made products and chemicals used in the home since they are more prevalent than the presence of radon. That can be prevented but there is no getting away from it.
