Yes with the correct paint: chalk paint, fusion paint or a paint formulated for Formica surfaces

  • Yes, I've done 2 different methods. In our house we were in about 13 years ago I sanded them really well. I used 4 inch rollers (paint brush in tight spots) and applied one coat of primer and 2 coats of paint. It was alot of elbow grease and going slow and steady with the roller but they turned out really nice.

A few months ago I did my bathroom cabinets with chalk paint and wax. I had to do 3 coats. During the 2nd coat I noticed the paint would scratch easily. So it's not true about chalk paint sticking to Formica. I'd give it a light sanding first if you go with chalk paint. I have no scratched on my bathroom cabinets but I am extremely careful handling them.

I never took the door off in either case, I had hidden hinges. If my hinges had shown I would have taken them off.

I'll be painting my kitchen soon. I may use chalk paint to lessen the amount of sanding to be done but I will seal them with a polycrylic type of product.
