I have never used hot glue before, but I found this blog. http://www.craftaholicsanonymous.net/how-to-get-rid-of-hot-glue-strings
I don't know how to stop it, but afterwards if you take your Hairdryer and blow it across them they usually melt and vanish completely.
While you are hot gluing before you completely take it away from your project or craft try moving the glue gun in a circle at a good speed and it will wined up the glue strands.
wind your hand in a circle like you would and filling an ice cream cone from a machine and it will cut off the hot glue bead and keep it in place.
I think you will always have some strings with hot glue. Just wind it around and take it off.
Once finished with your project, use a hair dryer to remove the hot glue strings.
