Enamel paint dries to a hard finish and is washable which is great for kitchen & bathroom cabinets.
Can always use enamel paint; however, with a light sanding, depending upon the color you painted the cabinet, it would look very homey, which is the current trend
Since it is already painted - try a polyurethane coat.
Sounds like you didn't clean & sand first, then prime. NO paint is going to last without the proper prep. Sorry, but you're going to have to start over and strip off the paint that did not adhere so you can get a proper bond.
Painted cabinet finish starts with the surface prep. It's an absolute MUST to wash and then primer before painting. Anything you put on top will not adhere without these first steps.
A top coat by Minwax comes in flat, satin or gloss, goes on very easy and is very durable
Flat paint is not as durable as semi gloss or gloss. Some idiot painted the walls in my kitchen with flat paint that was used in the living room and dining room. Every time I have to wash an area my rag or sponge takes a little paint off. It was painted before we purchased the house, so it still looks good and I can't see repainting it yet.
