We live in Arizona.. we we asked our AC guy that same question... he said... that in order to NOT restrict air flow to and from the unit... the cover would need to be at least 8 feet over the top of our unit... and that we need to keep "stuff" at least 2 feet away from the sides of the unit... we are still deciding if we want to put a pergola type of structure in that area... as it is right outside our kitchen window over looking our horse pasture and would block the view.
They are made to withstand being outside in the sun.
Why would you want to keep sun from the unit? They're made to be outside. And if you want some ideas for your project, post pictures and be more specific and we'll be glad to help you..
A couple arbor vitae shrubs, or a lattice wall surrounding 2-3 sides with a vine growing on it.
Hi Mrgnchg,
An air conditioning unit needs air around it to work properly - or so I've been told. If you want to hide it use plants that are high enough but won't grow so close to the unit that they block the air.

I agree with Linda above. My husband used to work in the heating/air industry. He agrees that your AC unit needs proper air flow to work its best. (btw your furnace also needs proper air flow). If you want to keep the sun off your AC unit, you can plant bushes around it to create shade, or install pre-fab fence panels around it. I hope this info helps you. Wishing you well.
I currently work in HVAC. It is very important not to use plants that have seeds or fuzz because this will clog your AC and it won't cool properly. Some tall grasses are acceptable, but you need to keep them several feet from the ac on all sides. A better solution would be a short privacy fence installed about 3' from the ac.
