If you were to try paint, do NOT use a paint brush. Try an out-of-sight area and use a spray painter and lightly spray a coat on and see if it works.
I was looking at Houzz the other day, and a DIY’er used beadboard WALLPAPER from Lowe’s?Home Depot? on line catalog. She covered laminate cupboards with it, painted it and the small strip of stained oak white. She said it had lasted a year so far. Sorry I can’t find the article to link for you.
Clean, lightly sand, prime, using good primer, then paint. Of course you will have to remove the cabinet doors and drawers.
Home Depot has some very good primer, Glidden Gripper, that will do the job. You will need to use a fine roller to apply the primer as well as the paint.
An above comment suggests using a sprayer which is a very good idea but it is not easy for an amature to use.
