I've painted over brick fireplaces before, but this stone is rough. The top of the hearth looks like smooth marble, but the bottom is the same rough stone.
You must use paint made for this due to the heat. Talk to someone at a paint store.
You can use a black stove pipe paint. You do not say if you are using the fireplace. If so, you need a heat resistant paint.
We use a heat resistant bbq paint on our wood stove.
Use a high-temperature paint for your topcoats if you intend to enjoy a fire in the fireplace.
Also take care to do a proper cleaning of the fireplace before you start painting
