I would suggest going to a paint store like Sherwin Williams and picking up some color brochures. They have several collections of paint colors that are made to flow from room to room.
Don't worry about popular colors (often this is a marketing tool by design firms and paint companies to get buyers to look at their products) but go with what works with the things you already own. This is the formula to use when picking colors: 60% of your room should be your main color (for walls or large pieces of furniture), 30% should be a complementary color, and 10% an accent color (for a "pop" of color). Have fun with this and choose colors that make your home a reflection of you and make you happy!
