I have one of those old antique sewing machines just like that and I just use it as a table in front of one of my windows. I put a lamp on it. I plan on painting it, just haven't had time since I've already got several projects going on now. I've seen where people paint them and use them as a vanity or even an entry table. You could even use it in the kitchen, I haven't seen that yet. If it's tall enough to be an island, that would be nice.
I have used one of the bases as a occasional table in the living room, topped with glass.... I have seen the DIY tv guys use them as: bathroom vanity bases, entry tables (with the wood machine case)... Pinterest.com should have ideas for you too
I have an old Singer and I display it with the Singer machine up as opposed to down inside the case. I practice Reiki and I have the machine displayed in front of a window with plants, painted watering cans, old antique pincushions, and small painted boxes. and of course, some crystals, an abalone sage shell. the machine is a great display piece and is also the first item people gravitate to when they walk in that room. I would never paint it/ the original finish is beautiful/ Hope that gives you some ideas.
