I can only speak about โchalk paintโ providing the following Rustoleum references. The chart compares chalked paint and milk paint.
Personally Ive never used or have the desire to unicorn spit - sorry!

I like using Annie Sloan chalk paint on bigger projects like dressers, armoires, and china hutches and I finish with Annie Sloan wax. I just think you get a nicer finish. It is expensive so try to buy it on sale and remember that a quart of Annie Sloan goes a looooong ways! I can get many projects out of one can. I like to use Rustoleum Chalked Painted on smaller projects like table trays, candle sticks, and signs and I either seal them with the matching Rustoleum clear sealer or wax them. You don't want to seal the Rustoleum paint with any poly except THEIR clear sealer. If you do---it bubbles up and you will cry! Their spray chalk paint is AWESOME! It gives you a very smooth matte finish.
You can watch lots of How To Videos on chalk paint websites. Annie Sloan, Country Chic are two that offer good tips. There are also LOTS of YouTube videos. Try this: http://www.dummies.com/home-garden/home-painting/how-to-paint-furniture-with-chalk-paint/
Really--you just need to find something small to begin with and just do it! I've learned A LOT just by working on things. Every chalk paint line is different so you will get different results from the various brands. I have favorite brands and some I wouldn't use again. It's fun! Try it!
I am just fascinated by Unicorn spit, so many unique and interesting projects, lots of eye-appeal to the beholder that love colors. As others have said, start small and experiment.
