    Use a sprayer. Much faster.

The question was between a brush and roller. Most home owners don't have immediate access to a sprayer. (Go rent one though) if no sprayer, roll with a 9 inch roller into a 5 gallon bucket with you product. work in 2 to 3 board sections and have a brush handy to get in the cracks. If you are a perfectionist have someone on the other side of the fence doing the same to eliminate darker spots... with stain.... with paint, less necessary. Spraying goes faster but you still need to work the product into the wood for longevity. Can do that with brush or roller. Never ever just spray anything with paint and walk away. Maybe car paint. Or cabinets. Anything with texture wants you to work that in to the cracks.
