There are several ways to do it and I have done all of them over the years in different homes! My favorite way is to use chalk paint and dab the paint on each brick, after painting the mortar lines. With this method some of the original beauty of the brick shows through.
The box stores have a liquid that you paint on...24 hrs later you peel it off, and all the dirt comes off with it, all the ash, charcoal etc...it is fantastic...or go to garysullivanonline.com or call the big box stores or Ace
I've done this several times and finally found the easiest way. No more tedious brick by brick. I painted the whole thing white, bricks and mortar lines. Just slap it on. Use as much or little paint on your brush as you like. You want it to look messy. Then I took leftover grey (from my wall paint) and used a narrower brush and painted the mortar lines, but again, MESSY. The bricks will look more dimensional. Then finally, rough it up with a little sandpaper (if you want to). DONE.
