I am mending a wall with joint compound instead of plaster. I am presetting screws. But don't know how to finish. Primer or not.

When you are satisfied with the repair you will need to prime it with a good primer (I use Kilz) and then you should be good to paint.

I use Behr paint that claims to require no primer. I've done yards and yards of repairs using drywall joint compound and there have been zero issues from not using primer.

I agree, a good primer first, then paint.

When in doubt... use a primer... over the whole wall.... it will prepare drywall and keep it from sucking up the paint... and if part of a wall is already painted it will cover and blend the old part with the new.
