Yes, stain! What's the point of pretty pine and then paint it!!
I like stain too, but it is a question of what do you prefer? There are lovely colored stains at the big box stores (Home Depot, Lowe's)
I would whitewash the boards for a rustic feel.
If you want authentic ... stain. Just don't go with dark stain.
