My son has recently painted his staircase which was shiplapped,he used Annie Sloan chalk paint straight onto the boards sorry can’t show you a picture but it’s fabulous.Helpful Reply -

Use a primer to make sure the stain doesn't bleed through and then you can successfully paint over the boards.Helpful Reply -

I would use Kilz as a base coat. I’ve done this before and it works very well.Helpful Reply -

The absolute best product to use is bonding primer...it will adhere to anything and then accept the new paint flawlessly.Helpful Reply -
