Yes, but the durability just isn't there. I'm wondering why a natural material that I can buy right now would look outdated. Pink ceramic tile? Sure. Slate? I would use it because natural stone never goes out of style.
The key word here is "slate". Its texture would be very difficult to paint and have it look natural. It's very porous and a would need a specialty company that knows how paint works with different tiles.

Also...Sherwin Williams says yes to painting ceramic tiles. Talk to them and take photographs. We have painted brick around fireplaces with no trouble at all. If you have an extra tile to show them, all the better. Good luck with both.
