we've used a 'disposable' sprayer every time -- just keep moving the wand to avoid 'glops' ... used with both Thompsons, Behr and at least 2 other brands ... deck was built in 1999 ... but with ground contact lumber and it's in very good condition -
Definately sprayer or roller is the right idea.
My only comment or suggestion is with our experience with PT wood sealing, (we have a front deck and enormous NEW rear deck, a boat dock and shed) is that the transparent and semi transparent stains seem to preform and look better. We had a huge new deck installed in late 2015 and the premium solid stain rated for 7 years did not last one with our environmental exposure with splitting chipping mold and mildew. We have sealed and resealed this rear waterfront deck three times now.
We not sure if the bad stain preformance is because it is a new wood install or not.
We now do regret not getting composite OR using a clearer more transparent stain product.
SAND first! use oil base or you will be painting the Colored Solid Stain every year!
Be sure the PT wood has properly cured before staining or painting. We rolled ours on with a roller and long pole.
Do some research and check into deck products such as Behr Deck Over... made to help restore wooden decks... I believe that the prep is to power wash, sand the really rough patches and use a roller to apply.... Home Depot or Lowe's both carry products for this type of job.
