Try boat paint? Polyurethane?
My bird bath was porous as well, I blotched it with other paints that I had lying around, then, I brushed on some Flex Seal. You need to make sure the bird bath is dry. Keep it inside for about a week, before Painting and make sure paint is completely dry before putting on Flex Seal.
