I am assuming the door is either metal or wood. I would use some paint stripper. Brush it on, let it set a few minutes and rub off with old newspaper. Then finish as you like with paint if it is metal and paint or stain if it is wood.
You could try sanding first if you do not want to use chemicals.
Hi D,
I don't know for sure, but I'm wondering if you steamed it a bit to get it warm, if it would scrape off? If you try this and use a steam iron, I'd put a piece of cloth over the area so it doesn't get burned. Good luck!
It's probably oil based paint, (looks like it), so whatever you do, it may damage the wood grain below it.
Remove the door, put a thick bath towel over it, pour hot tap water, not boiling water, over it, and leave it for 30 minutes or so. Then try your scraper. At the worse, nail polish remover will remove oil based paint, but as mentioned, it may damage the underlying finish.
Try using a blow dryer on low heat just to soften the paint very carefully and scrape it off. Don't get it too hot so you don't harm the fake woodgrain. Wave the blower over the paint to distribute the heat while slowly scraping. There also is a possibility that the woodgrain paper was damaged in that spot and the fiberboard exposed. That could be why it was painted and the paint bonded to the fiberboard.
Ty i will try that!
