How to paint a dresser/cabinet?

I would like to paint a dresser that has a very slick surface, somewhat like kitchen cabinets. I has a plastic like surface, and I foresee the paint just peeling off. How could this be done so that the paint will stay on the dresser and drawers?

As long as the surface laminate has not started to peel off you are good to go. There are paints that claim to adhere well to any clean surface without further preparation. Ask where you buy paint. I'd still use fine sandpaper to scuff up the surface and assure good adhesion.
