Could be something seriously wrong with your waste pipes. Sewer gas could be backing into your home. Call an experienced plumber.
You might try pouring plain vinegar down your drains. Let it sit there for say five minutes, then run water. That is a cheap fix that might help.
Maria if this is your own home can you down stairs and see if it is leaking. Sometimes the wax seal breaks and it's just a matter of replacing that to stop the smell. So obviously the easiest and fastest way is to see it from underneath but if it's an apartment or on a second level of your home then the only real way is to remove toilet and chevk, which will require you to replace wax seal anyway. Go on YouTube for instructions and a visual because if it's slowly leaking you can end up with ruined drywall ceiling if on second floor heck even on first if you have a basement and that's costly while a wax ring is cheap.
it just might be rotting, moldy wood check for leaks, we found that when we remodeled out walk in shower
Is there a floor drain in your bathroom? I so pour some water into it, it could be dry. You can also plug the sink and overflow water into the drain hole near the top of it to clean that one up, and lastly check the tub and toilet
Are you using all the drains (tub-shower-sink) on a regular basis? When you do not use a bathroom fixture for a length of time, the p-trap can dry out and sewer gas can come into your room. If this is the case, pour at least a gallon of water with vinegar down the drain...leaving it for over night. We keep our drains clean by pouring cloryx bleach down the drains now and then...(We were having trouble with clogged pipes and our plumber told us to do this...Helped a lot.).
All of the answers are good ones, but it could also be a clogged vent pipe. If it's coming from all of the drains, that could be the problem. Try to figure out exactly where the smell is coming from and then go from there. Otherwise, you may end up tearing out the whole bathroom to find the smell.
I had an odor problem but my husband never smelled anything, my daughter confirmed that there was a smell. My son went into the crawlspace and we found that the pipe that takes the sewage out of the house had a 4 imch crack right at the wall he dug and found the pipe and replaced it for us
Put cup of baking soda then 2-3cups of vinegar. Let it work for 5 min. Then flush with HOT water.
Mix one half cup of salt and one half cup of baking soda. Pour it into the drain and pour one half cup of white vinegar into the drain. Let it fizz and then rinse. You could also try pouring boiling water down the drain as well.
