There are paints available that claim to not need surface preparation. If it doesn't adhere well removing it will be a nightmare.
I'd either use fine sandpaper all over to kill the gloss then clean it well to remove dust and household grease accumulation before painting. Alternatively there is a product called "liquid sandpaper" that will prepare the surface for painting. Less work, more money. Your choice.
Hi Heidi, use a product called liquid sandpaper. You apply it on the wall and while still wet, prime the wood. After you prime, use any quality paint of your choice. Good luck.
scrub with TSP first ( available at any paint store). Dry surface then paint. Hope that helps.
Thank you
Make sure the paneling is clean and dry. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123 or BIN. Then paint like painting regular walls. If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with non shrink drywall patching compound. Just put on enough to fill the grooves. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth the patch. Then prime and paint.
Thank you.
I inherited my grandfather home and decided to paint the wood paneling as my first update. I cleaned it with 409 then primed it with kilz. At that time I don’t think they had the water based kilz so I don’t know how strong the smell is with that one but the original you will definitely want to make sure the area is well ventilated because it has a really strong smell when you are applying it but i Only had to put one good coat and then I was able to paint and it worked great! The entire house was wood paneling. I did all of it and then I decided to kilz the ceilings as well because they had some stains from leaks in the roof over the years. I used a couple coats of kilz for that and didn’t need to put a coat of paint on top of it. It’s a big job Good luck i hope it turns out great for you
