Folk Art used to make a fabric paint. I would try that. However, if you can 't find it, I would use craft acrylic paint, thinned with water and inexpensive sponge brushes. "Paint" over an old plastic tray or bucket. You will have a lot of drips. You may need to do several costs to get the color you want. Paint alone might be very gloppy.
