I love painting rocks and it's actually pretty easy. A couple things I've tried that I find work very well.
1- you can paint words or designs right on the clean rocks as they are OR you can put a bunch into a box and spray paint them so they are all one color. Example if I want the design to really show well I might paint them all white...or black. Then paint my design. Spray paints work so well and are quick!
2- Use acrylic paints in small bottles. They can be bought in the craft section of nearly every store for about $1.25 each.
3- Google painted rock designs and you will have lots of easy ones to create.
4- Use cute little phrases like, "You Rock!". For ease in writing you can use permanent magic markers but I've discovered paint pens are great too and come in so many colors!
5- Once it's dry spray with any clear coat spray paint!
They can be left around your garden, left around town on walks , big ones in the house are great door stops- add felt on the bottom!
Wash rock thoroughly. I use Dawn dish soap and a nail or old tooth brush to scrub. Let dry thoroughly. Prime, either with a background color, black, white paint/primer or a clear flat enamel spray. Either hand draw your design very lightly with pencil, trace a design onto by darkly penciling the entire back of chosen picture, wrap rock with it and trace over with a hard tipped pen or stylus to transfer, or "wing it" with your design. Then simply paint. Any paint will work. I prefer acrylics but craft paint is good too, even oils (though dry time is long). When done, clear coat all sides with a clear lacquer spray. Choose whichever sheen you like; from mat to high gloss.
