Can I turn my inground gunite pool into a cistern?

Water is very precious in Texas. Older gunite pool seems perfect for converting to a cistern.

what a great idea. my relatives in Canada all had cisterns on their roofs. suppose you could funnel the rain water run off your roof with tubes from the downspouts.
put a permeable pool cover on it. put a pump in to get the water out.

Are mosquitoes a problem in the summer where you live? If so, you might want to take that into consideration and research a solution so that the cistern does not become a breeding ground.
