Hi Karen, it's easy to paint on burlap but be sure to place the burlap onto cardboard or a well covered area as the paint will definitely bleed through the texture of the burlap. You can use nearly any type of paint you like including wall paint or even the small plastic bottles of craft paint available at your local craft stores. Stencils are often helpful with fabric such as burlap. You can actually thumbtack them to the burlap and cardboard underneath to get a clear stencil design onto the burlap. On painting any fabric, you need to let the top off of the can of paint so the paint gets thicker. Then you will be able to apply fewer thicker coats.
If you put a piece of cardboard behind the burlap and wait til the paint dries before removing, it will stop the paint from going through
