Hi Karen,
You would have to drill a hole and take a look. Then repatch the hole.
Thank you I assume you drill the hole on the exterior of the house,do you need a camera/scope of some kind
Cut an inspection hole in the wall and look inside with a mirror and flashlight. About 4" square hole would work. Then just patch the hole.
Karen,
Have your local utility company perform an energy audit. Almost all utilities have energy saving programs and will perform free audits. They will use a thermal camera and tell you where you have insulation. It will be a good way to get an idea of what you have for insulation all over your house and not just one specific location. An old school way is to remove one of your wall socket cover plates. (Shut power off to the socket first.) You might be able to see if there is any insulation surrounding the junction box and might be able to slice away just a small piece of drywall that will still be covered by the plate to get a better look. You can also insert a straightened coat hanger and see if you pull any insulation out with the hooked end. This will only show you something in that one area.
You are welcome.
