It is hard to duplicate the original texture of popcorn ceilings but it is worth a try--every contractor that sprays popcorn on ceilings does it differently and also the amount of texture has changed over the years. You may also notice that the color of the repair material is different--especially if your ceilings have not been painted or repainted for some time. You may feel OK with your repairs but you might have to repaint the entire ceiling so you don't notice any repairs as much.
