Hi Ellen,
My name is Linda. Here's a link to some ideas from other Hometalk members using paint cans or buckets. There are also some here which don't use them but came up with Hometalk's search feature. Just ignore those and move on.

If they are metal you can put them on your fence and plant tomatoes in them...or flowers. If they are plastic you can drill round hikes and plant strawberries, vegetables, flowers or put drain holds in the bottom and plant your veggies the regular way....no weeding.
you can cut plastic buckets in half and make concrete walking stones. One in the ground then hall away with the handle and the other way, flip the concrete out after spraying with either grease or wax.
I use mine to make Concrete Pipes, Tanks and Other Hollows. You just wrap newspaper around it and duct tape it and Pour Concrete around the Paper, voila you have a Concrete Flowerpot, Pipe, Tank or Rat Trap.
