If so, I believe it calls for wool sweaters because it's felted (washed in hot water and the fibers of the wool get tight and close together) and only wool will give you that effect. Sweatshirt material won't do that.

You can use cashmere,alpaca,angora if you cannot find wool. These can all be felted/shrunk down. check goodwill in higher ended areas of town for old cashmere sweaters.
