Chalk paint is an easy fix for something you want to paint as it needs little preparation work. The reason you need to go over it with wax is that it does not hold up well. Chalk paint comes off easily.
Clean your cabinet with TSP, prime it with a good primer then use a semi-gloss paint and it will last for years.
Hi Diana
That is because chalk paint is removable with very little effort. So if you want your chalk paint to last and stay with the same finish as when it was first applied, you'll need the soft wax step.
Merry Christmas and best to you.
You have to seal it because it rubs/comes off. There are many other easier ways to seal it here's info. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnMTAh2c0e0
