Your problem could be the result of settling, roof issues, or too much or too little humidity.
Check your roof/ foundation outside this area. Set interior humidistat to no more than 40%. Run a dehumidifier, if needed.
Sometimes the cracked area must be enlarged before spackling, repainting.
