Everything I have read about chalk paint says no, no need to sand. However, I find that sanding will only help the paint adhere better, so giving it a quick once over with some sand paper will ensure maximum durability!
HI Sharon. I did a desk last year and the only thing I did was wipe it down with mineral spirits before painting to clean it well.
