Shawn, If it's the kind I'm thinking of, remove it and replace it. It should lay in a frame, just lift it up and turn it to remove it. Aloha.
Is it in a frame or is it stapled to wooden slats? Our ceiling in the basement is low so they put lath directly on the floor joists and stapled the 1x1 to that. If we were going to replace any single panel we'd have to cut at least one side of the fitted piece off and figure a way to get the staples out without damaging the pieces nearby. To replace them (we did replace a couple) we used brad nails. They were the only thing we could find that wouldn't be visible. The basement is for storage in our house. If we spent more time down there and we could afford it I'd look for something else.
