How do I clean up the steel straps of an old cedar chest?

    If the straps have rust, plain old white vinegar. Let set for hour or two. Clean with water. Then mix baking soda in water as final rinse to neutralize the vinegar.

    Will never rust again.


    Or you can use 50/50 molasses & water. Works the same, just slower & more precise.
