You can keep carpet from fraying by using a transition piece.
You can take it to a flooring business that deals with carpet and rugs and they will be able to put an edging material on it for you so that it doesn't constantly fray for you.
Nancy is right many places that sell flooring have special machines that will bind the edges of the rug. Many carpeting stores do that with left over carpeting and sell the throw rugs in the showrooms. But it is generally called binding the edges. And to answer your question a transition piece is a strip (generally metal) where two different types of flooring or where two pieces are joined together (if you don't want a seam).
Hi Betty, home improvement stores sell carpet by the foot and they have finishes that can go on the cut edges for fraying prevention, check out the stores for it, it is really inexpensive

Home Depot will bind rugs at a very reasonable price. If not you can try using hot glue and gluing a cotton seam binding around the rug.
