I don't know what you're referencing, but I've seen people make faux brick walls using painters tape to create the lines and going over the bricks with a joint compound, then painting to add dimension.

I bought "brick" wallpaper from Steve s blinds and wallpaper online. Looks real. They also have fieldstone, stackstone and other color bricks.Great price.
