Hi Kelly, I mix acrylic polyurethane to my paint so that I do not have to sand. I mix 1 part poly to 3 parts paint. Just remember water based poly only works with water based paint and the same with oil based.
It’s probably easier and cheaper to buy paint with the sealer already in it. But you still need to sand between coats to get a really shiny surface. Best wishes!

Personally I wouldn’t mix the two as they have different jobs. You especially don’t want to mix water based and oil based together.
