Wash and throw in the dryer to remove chemicals and preshrink
Hi Tina,
It depends on what the fabric is made of: cotton, silk, wool, rayon, or synthetic fiber. The second question is how permanent you want the dye. RIT dye is a direct dye that can fade or wash out over time. For more permanent color, go to the website PRO Chemical & Dye Inc. They have a tremendous amount of information on the website.
You'll be more successful if you launder the fabric you are going to dye. This will rid the fabric of sizing or other chemical treatment and allow the fabric to accept the dye more readily. No need to dry the fabric, but then you can remove the fabric, pour the dye into your machine and mix the dye with water. Add the damp fabric to the washer and let it rotate a while, then allow the fabric to "sit" for a time and check to see how deep the color is. You can let the fabric sit for hours if needed and the color will deepen the longer you wait. It is difficult however to know just exactly how the color will turn out. When rinsed the dye color will likely become lighter. Good luck and have fun!
